Pearl River Delta Law Seminar and Legal Services Consultation Series

The Foshan and Zhongshan stops of the Pearl River Delta Law Seminar and Consultation Series on the topic of ‘Hong Kong’s legal services: helping to open the door to international trade’ were successfully held on 2 and 3 June 2010. The event was jointly organised by the Law Society of Hong Kong (the ‘Law Society’), the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Zhongshan Development and Reform Bureau and the Foshan Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau, with almost 400 business representatives from both Zhongshan and Foshan attending the event. The President of the Law Society Mr Huen Wong and the Vice-President of the Law Society and Chairman of its Mainland Legal Affairs Committee Mr Junius Ho, together with 23 members of the Law Society, held talks with representatives from local enterprises. The delegation also took the opportunity to visit the Zhongshan Lawyers Association and the Foshan Lawyers Association and discussed with them the opportunities for business development and cooperation.

Mr Junius Ho, Ms Elaine Ho, Ms Grace Chu, Mr Yeung Sai Man, Mr Patrick Lam, Mr Alvin Chung and Ms Chiu Ka Yin were speakers at the two seminars held in Zhongshan and Foshan. They talked to business representatives about legal issues which may require attention including: handling overseas trade disputes, legal risks involved in acquisition of brands and businesses and protection of intellectual property.

The representatives of law firms participating in this event said that the seminar and consultation series enabled them to have a better understanding of the latest developments in the Pearl River Delta region and the demand for cross-regional legal services there. They were also able to have direct discussions with Mainland business representatives during the consultative sessions to answer their queries about legal issues involving cross-border transactions. Topics of conversation included making an application for trade mark registration, acquisition of brands and the control of risk in the acquisition process and issues with regard to taxation on Mainland enterprises investing overseas.

The Seminar and the Consultation Series are the Mainland Legal Affairs Committee’s major events of this year that aim to assist Hong Kong law firms search for business opportunities in the Pearl River Delta region, establish contacts with law firms located in that region and to promote Hong Kong’s role as a platform to help businesses ‘go outbound’ to seek new opportunities. The successful organising of the event in both Zhongshan and Foshan is a testimony of the effectiveness of this kind of activity. The Mainland Legal Affairs Committee will hold another Pearl River Delta Law Seminar and Consultation Series, in August, in Jiangmen and Dongguan. Members are welcome to join.
